Well said.  the only thing i might add to your assessment of current radio
operations is the lack of top-level people coming from the programming
ranks, although i have seen in the past year or two a shift towards an
understanding that a former jock or pd might have something to add.

The pay in our (MAINE) area has always been lacking.  if it were better,
then many of the really good radio people would still be in radio, i'm sure.
for the benefit of the list:  an AFTRA on-air announcing gig in Boston might
have a starting scale of around $50k per year or so.  the non-union stations
are closer to 30-35 per year.  in Maine, a PD or a highly-sought morning
show might make what a non-union Boston announcer would start at.  the money
aspect of smaller-market radio is bleak.  and the only thing keeping that
from getting better is greed, pure and simple.
