Re: WHEB-AM 750 Portsmouth NH

January 31, 1991 was the day WHEB AM went dark. Knight Broadcasting of
NH, Inc. (the licensee then) basically made a deal with Portsmouth zoning
officials. In order to get a waiver for a higher FM tower they agreed to
go dark on AM and take down its stick. WHEB had a long and illustrious
history dating to August 13, 1932 but as the 90s arrived it was a
struggling AM daytimer which just couldn't win FCC nighttime service.

Tony Vacarro was the longtime chief engineer at WHEB and I think still
lives in Portsmouth.
