His defense is that literacy is not a requirement in his job.
He is defended by some co-workers/peers as "doing a great job"
and "speaks the language of the neighborhood."  Of course, the
fact that he is in education where literacy is the touchstone
of accomplishment, doesn't seem to matter.  Go figure.

Only that North Andover borders Lawrence and his criticism may 
be taken as "hitting a little too close to home" by many 
"Greater Lawrence" residents.
