I am also no fan of Savage.  It is also important to
recognize that his extreme, anti-immigration views are
not representative of the mainstream of conservative
thought.  In fact, such views do no really fit the
typical left-right political spectrum because they are
shared by some on the left, including significant
elements of organized labor.  They may not express
themselves in the same colorful terms as used by folks
like Savage, but they advocate many of the same
policies.
