RE: 1965 Blackout Airchecks
On the night of The Blackout, I was an 8 year old at a neighborhood toy
store in Boston's North End, buying Silly Putty for my baby sister. The
lights in the store went out. We went out to the street, and saw most
of the lights on Hanover Street were out, except for the neon lights of
the dripping wine cask of The Cantina restaurant. They were fading, as
I looked up. Saint Stephen's Church had just been renovated, and had
bright lights turned on to illuminate the church, and much of the
street.
It wasn't long before I was 'rescued' and taken home by my older sister
and her friend, armed with a flashlights. I found my mother was still
cooking, and playing her transistor radio. It was tuned to WBZ, at
first. Later, we were able to tune in to WMEX. Woo Woo Ginsberg was on
the air, talking about the magnitude of the blackout, and that WMEX was
broadcasting on auxiliary power. He was playing records, which sounded
like they were playing a bit fast. I thought it was very cool that they
could do that.
The only disappointment of the night was that I couldn't see The Red
Skelton Show on TV... It was a Tuesday, after all. Does anyone know if
there were any TV stations broadcasting that night? ( -Not that anyone
would be able to receive them!)
