The Reagan Administration canceled the push because it
had been a failure.  I used to work with a man who ran
the U.S. Metrics Association.  He lost his job when
the Reagan administration cancelled the program, but
he even admits that the private sector has dealt
effectively with the situation.  Businesses where
using metric measurements is essential for
international trade use the system.  It was never
necessary to impose the system on the U.S. public that
didn't want it.
