If I may disagree somewhat....

The weather forecast is close to being the only time non-health
science is given more than lip service by commercial broadcasters.
Furthermore, for those who understand how the weather works, a little
bit of extra discussion can provide a great deal of information as to
how reliable the forecast is, and what listeners/viewers should
actually expect.  The Weather Channel is a useful service, but rarely
provides this sort of information unless there's a major weather event
taking place in the viewer's immediate vicinity.
