You know that the real reason for them slimming down the paper is the
escalating cost of newsprint paper itself. :)  It's been happening
througout the years.  

Remember when most of the broadsheets were as wide as the Wall Street
Journal?  Tabloids were also much bigger page-wise than they are today and
the font was larger in some cases also, IIRC
