<<ASSOCIATED PRESS acquired the UPI wire service today. Terms of the deal
have not been disclosed. A total of 47 UPI radio staffers will be out of
work.>>
having worked with both, let's hope they can combine the best of both
services.
UPI does/did have really good customer support. they do answer the phones
24/7 and most times can help pinpoint a problem.
of late, though, UPI had been relying on information from outside sources (in
particular, SportsTicker... they messed up Red Sox scores twice this week.
Once in the headline of the story(last night: Angels 5 Red Sox 1), and
Wednesday night's included the head (Indians 7 Red Sox 1) and also stuck
with the same score in the body of the story)
UPI also, for those who've relied on wire features for show prep/content, has
really, really excellent features. Especially the lifestyle stuff, with some
written for stations with attitude, and some written for those who still
prefer not to make fart/penis jokes on the air. And they have great Music
features.
I will say it's got to be good for UPI subscribers who will hopefully
convince management that even thought AP is a tad more expensive (hence the
UPI wire in the newsroom), AP does have outstanding local coverage.
good luck to any list member here associated (bad word?) with UPI.
