Except for certain differences, they are very similar.  A translator is
authorized to carry only one station's programming, while a repeater
conveys in turn numerous participants' signals heard on the input
frequency.  Both function as relay stations.  Repeaters could be called
translators in that they have an output (transmit) frequency different
from the input (receive) frequency.  Translators could be said to repeat.
 Due to a rules change, it can no longer be said that all translators
translate, as non-commercial translators can now be fed by other means
than off-air reception and thus have no input frequency.
