WRKO-FM was stirring up things a bit, but it was still considered a cheap
option over hiring livetalent to fill in those Federally-mandated
non-simulcasting hours. According to WRKO's first PD, Bob Henaberry, what
put Top 40 on WRKO was the early success of KHJ/Los Angeles, which Bob was
sent to aircheck and analyze. That info is under "Henaberry's KHJ Manifesto"
at the BIG 68 site.
General Tire, owner of WRKO and KHJ (and others) did NOT wat to go Top 40,
as the people in charge personally did not likethat kind of music. It took
the urging of G.M. Perry Ury, the success of KHJ, and the results of
Henaberry's trip to convince the men of rubber.
WRKO could have made WRKO-FM (by that time WROR) go live, in an attempt to
mirror the success of WRKO. But politics within the organization stopped
that effort cold...it was too late when it went live, in later years. WROR
never came close to the success of sister station WRKO.
BTW, the above info was derived by one-on-one interviews with the former
players. :)
