This format is a new rock hybrid that's been popping up on stations around the
country. KXOK in St. Louis recently switched to this presentation. Basically
it's a classic rock format, but the music is harder and more uptempo. Typical
classic rockers seem to get bogged down in some of the softer titles like
Crosby Stills and Nash, the Moody Blues, Beatle ballads etc. WZMX seems to be
positioning themselves between traditional classic rock WHCN and Active Rock
WCCC. It's probably pretty close to AOR, but without the currents. With
WHCN, WCCC and WMRQ playing some form of rock in the market, plus WAQY and
WPLR listenable in most of the Hartford ADI, I don't think there is a big
enough piece of the pie for all these rock stations, no matter what the
"format" is.
