Threatening the President

I mentioned a couple of days ago how Groucho Marx was investigated by the
feds for an offhand remark about Nixon's assassination. I've just come
across Groucho's own account, in his book, =The Groucho Phile=:

"During Nixon's first term, I was quoted as saying the only thing that
would save the United States would be Nixon's assassination. I was
immediately put on the infamous Enemies List and, as I was informed later,
put under FBI surveillance. Later events proved that Nixon was indeed a
storm trooper trampling over our personal freedoms, but I still shouldn't
have said what I did. The language was intemperate and no better than
some of Nixon's appalling statements over the course of his political
career. An earlier quote of mine about Nixon was more in the Groucho
character. After Kennedy defeated him in the 1960 election, the Nixon
family moved to Trousdale, the section of Beverly Hills in which I live.
I was asked about my new neighbor. 'I'd rather have him here than in the
White House,' I remarked. After all, if I could accept Elvis Presley as a
neighbor, why not Tricky Dick?"
