In days past each Network had a bellweather top-of-the-hour newscast.
(ABC had multiple hourlies, but the top of the hour 'Information'
newscast was considered their most valued/serious/imporatant.)

The newscast that NBC fed their stations for the top of the hour (:00)
was actually fed first at :54. This facilitated the Top 40 stations
which liked to do news before the hour. (WNBC actually ran the 'pre-
feed' network news, opting not to be running ANY news at the top of the
hour.) This also facilitated stations like WITS which thought it more
importatnt to run LOCAL news at the top of the hour.

Someone told me that the NBC newscast was actually '*recorded* by the
anchor in NY at :48. (That may have been fed to the stations as well,
seeing as the old top 40's like to do news at :50. Similar to the ABC
Contemporary Network...)
