Somebody (I don't recall whom right now) asked whatever happened to Channel
1. Courtesy of Barry Mishkind's Broadcast FAQ, Barry explains:
"This was the original allocation for FM stations. (42-50 mc)
When Sarnoff had FM reallocated after WWII (to kill it), it
was used for other purposes.
There was TV in the 2.5 mHz region (the Jenkins system, also
killed by Sarnoff), as well as some assignment for TV before
WW II...but 48-54 mHz was TV "Channel 1" for a while. As
proof: the RCA model 630 TV set had a "Channel 1" position
on its step tuner."
