Independent stations' news coverage "back in the day"

I just listened to one of WBZ's brief centennial pieces, this one on
President Kennedy's assassination in 1963 and the station's coverage of the
event. I know that 'BZ had an extensive news department at the time and
cooperated with the other Westinghouse stations in covering national and
world news, but what about other independent stations? (I'm thinking
specifically of WNAC and WHDH, but those are only two of many.) Were they
entirely dependent on teletype and what actualities AP and UPI made
available on occasions such as this? I was only twelve at the time, and I
don't remember.
