Independent stations' news coverage "back in the day"

I just heard one of WBZ's brief centennial pieces, this one on President
Kennedy's assassination in 1963 and the station's coverage of it.  I know
that WBZ had an extensive news department at the time and that Westinghouse
had a national news presence, but how did most large, independent,
