No, that's not the point.  The attractions of being a star (remember
that term, "materialistic?"), especially to a young person, far outweigh
the drawbacks.  All they see is money, fame and copious members of the
opposite sex to cavort with.  Having people you don't know and have
never met take an interest in you (sometimes to extremes) is a very
powerful draw on one's ego.  Famous people are endlessly splattered all
over the media, and young people generally don't have the maturity to
reject all that in order to keep their privacy.  By the time they
realize their privacy is gone and there's nothing they can do about it,
it's too late.
