Re: OP ED piece on FCC new rules
Kevin posted, along with the link, a nod to the author:
>>(snip)The author is the husband of a US Senator from New York State who at
one time worked in Washington.<<
i read the piece. it wasn't bad at all. even a little self-depricating humor
included with references to preferences of food. funny, though, i'd have
thought with the suggestion to email congressional and senate members he'd have
included his wife's email address. and yes, more consolidation means the loss
of more and more local flavor of the airwaves. when i say flavor, i mean very
local, concerned and talented people at work at these stations. one will find
more local flavor in the smaller markets, and it's here that you'll find many
of the former major market types attempting to hang onto what little dignity
they have left, along with hearing young, budding broadcasters. in stations
such as these, the elders can help the newcomers, and do so with more panache
and knowledge than those entrusted in management positions, fwiw. i know that
one large corporate entity bought out a handful of local, midcoast Maine radio
stations, turned the staff into the street, and flipped the bird-feed switch.
i spoke with one such Boston personality yesterday, and even though his best
broadcast years have passed, he was still possessed of a loss of doing what he
loves, and doing it in a place where he felt he could contribute and still keep
a roof over his head. (for Bill O'Neil: someday, kid, THIS will all be yours!)
as to the author's intent: i think it was very clearly and well stated. i
thought the wording had a familiar tone. and at the onset of reading the
article, i thought the name at the top familiar, but fortunately for really
stupid people like me, the Daily News thought to include a brief c/v on the
author. Thank Goodness for that!
