RE: COL

COL appears to be useful when trying to move closer to a major market or to
establish a station where it's dicey, and the applicant is looking for a
compelling item to push the application through. Otherwise, there appear to
be few standards. Some stations have COL's that are less than just a
crossroads!

Now, diverting to Starview for just a moment:

That station was a great top-40 outlet in the early 80's, WHTF - 92 Rock. It
was short-lived though (about 3-4 years to my memory). Keymarket
Communications purchased then-WTPA (104.1, Harrisburg) and the call letters
and #1 format in Harrisburg was picked up by then-WKCD "Magic 93" at 7pm
January 15, 1985.

Some good history on this from the WKCD/new WTPA perspective at:
http://www.modeweekly.com/1999/0499/PP-MichaelBrandon0498.htm

The late Michael Sarzynski (at one time part of WNBC 660), part-owner and
Operations Manager at WHTF saw the writing on the wall (that the new
Wink104) would be eating his lunch soon as WHTF was/is a class-A closer to
York than Harrisburg while WNNK is a solid class-B (though short spaced to
WAEB-FM), and flipped back to the album format that had been the staple
programming of the station before their brief (yet successful) stint as
top-40.

I would *love* to find some old airchecks of that station. They had a
fantastic top-of-the-hour legal ID. And it was *legal*.

<drum and guitar build> "W H T F - Starview - 92 Rock!"

And for some reason, my mind always then starts playing "Jump" by Van Halen
after I think of that TOH ID...
