I remember being driven to Boston by my mother (not even old enough to
drive, yet)
to get my Third. I was promised a summer job by WKTQ, South Paris
(Maine) if I
got my license. What a joy when it arrived in the mail! Later, when I
went to
Vocational School, the FCC held tests in Portland the spring I
graduated. I went
for the whole enchilada - 1st w/radar endorsement. Unfortunately, the
examiner
forgot the answers for one of the parts. So, he said "Either you have a
full 1st Phone
or you still have your Third Class. I practically sat on the mailbox
for a week waiting.
Indeed I had a 1st phone. Back then, the 5 years before renewal seemed
like an
eternity. Then they took that away with the lifetime license. Ah,
things aren't like they
used to be in the "Good Old Days!"
