Re: WBOQ (FM) Sold (All in the Family)

WCRN is on 830 AM. It's in Worcester (the transmitter is west of Worcester)
and runs 50 kW-D/5 kW-N DA-2. WCRN has recently filed an application to
increase its night power to 50 kW by adding a third tower to its night array
on land the station apparently already owns just east of the existing array.
Despite a dial position only 20 kHz above WEEI, WCRN's day signal in
Arlington is fine on several of my radios and its night signal is usually
listenable. (According to WCRN's application to increase its night power,
nighttime interference-free service extends only to the 10.289 mV/m contour,
which with the current 5-kW night operation means just barely past the
eastern boundary of Worcester. The increase to 50 kW N would move that
contour to about midway between Worcester and Framingham. I estimate the
current night signal where I live to be about 1 mV/m, but the interference
is usually not that severe. The prediction of the NIF contour is based on
the root-sum-squared of 10% skywaves, and since one station, WCCO
Minneapolis, dominates the calculation for WCRN, my listening results seem
quite reasonable.)

Not far from my house, though, in Belmont, WCRN has problems on my car radio
because of WRKO and WWZN. WRKO has an extremely strong signal all over
northwest suburbia. WWZN's transmitter is in Waltham, right on the Belmont
line, so its signal in Belmont--especially at night--is even stronger than
WRKO's. 1510-680=830, so the mixing product on 830 interferes somewhat with
WCRN--especially at night when the signal is weaker.
