the "new" WROR

Meet the new WROR, same as the old WROR.

Their "classic DJs" weekend is of some interest, as we
get to hear the voices of our past. And some of the
stuff they're playing might be varied, but how much of
it will you hear on WROR when the weekend is over?

Over the past few months as I listened to WROR, I
figured they wanted to be "in between" 'ODS and 'ZLX.
A format niche...

There were rumors of a format change, and the hiring
of Buzz Knight from WZLX made you think they were
going for classic rock. Yes, they are playing quite
a bit of 60s 70s and some 80s, but it's not as
"hard rocking" as you'd expect. CSN&Y... Jimmy
Buffet...Eagles...Fleetwood Mac.

The playlist is indeed narrow...like they're going for
people who only like exactly what they're playing and
would probably--horrors--change the station
if they heard:

--danceable stuff or R&B-influenced (Madonna, Michael
Jackson, O'Jays)

--"new wave" or 80s/90s rock (Midnight Oil, Adam Ant,
Billy Idol, B52s)

--"soft rock", romantic stuff (example: "Longer" by
Dan Fogelberg)

--folk-rock or country rock (though something
like "Fire and Rain" by James Taylor might be OK)

--anything "too old" (pre-Beatles) or too new (most
80s, 90s).

I thought they'd be tweaking their playlist at least a
little bit, but it doesn't seem to be so.

If another station came along, one that would have a
much broader playlist, you could imagine an ad
campaign for them: They could show about 10 CDs
on a shelf ("Fleetwood Mac's Greatest Hits",
"Best of the Eagles", etc.) with the caption:
"Meet WROR's playlist. All of it."

Then they could show a stack of CDs extending to
the heavens. "Now here's ours..."
