While it may save some money in not hiring a substitute host, it also
provides consistency on the show. Most of the syndicated talk shows do
this--Stern, Imus, Dolans etc....run "best of" shows, as do an increasing
number of local morning shows on music stations (Matty, etc.). More often
than not, listeners tune in to hear the host, not some substitute trying to
do someone else's schtik. The exception would be using someone who is a
part of the show, VB hosting when Howie Carr is off, for example. WBZ uses
substitute hosts when their regular talk hosts are off because their shows
tend to focus on very current events and would sound very dated if rerun.
