RE: WWZN 1510's noncritical-hours day pattern is on

At night, I've heard "phase distortion" in the WWZN signal as close as
Waltham
St. and High St. at the West Newton/Waltham line. That's just a few miles
from
their site.

If you continue in that direction (southwesterly from their site) and join
Route 16 westbound from West Newton square, the signal is still fairly
strong
but there is spotty phase distortion off and on. A few miles farther up
Route
16 in Wellesley Hills, the signal is becoming weak and subject to noise
from
adjacent nighttime skywaves.

By Wellesley Square just a couple more miles up, the nighttime WWZN signal
is
practically gone (even on a nearby hill where I could see their tower
lights!)
This must still be less than 10 miles from the transmitter.

Weston is also a very poor area for their signal at night, but it sounds to
me
like the sharp null is slightly to the south in Wellesley.

Strangely enough, I was about 25 miles west of Albany NY last weekend and
heard WWZN's skywave in-and-out. They and (of course) WBZ, who I could even
hear in the daytime, were the only Boston's that seemed to make the trip.

By the way, 25 miles west of Albany at night, 50,000 watt WPTR becomes
unlistenable!
