Not familiar with the station, but they may have been trying to re-create 
"old fashioned" T40 where you could get away with playing Frank Sinatra 
into Jimi Hendrix into the Bee Gees.

Don't know what they were using, but music-on-hard drive automation was 
indeed around in 1996.  We were using the Scott Studios system on WJYY & 
WNHI in 1996.  Some shifts were with live jocks, others voicetracked.
