It is now dormant.
(Readers please excuse the following digression into the intricate
details of US Postal Service operations....)
The first three digits of the ZIP Code(tm) identify a sorting center
which is responsible for the area in question. Many bulk mailers
pre-sort their mail this way in order to speed up delivery and obtain
a lower rate from the Postal Service. 021 is the Boston sorting
center, which I believe is the Dorchester Ave. GMF (also known as
``South Station Annex''). 024 was originally assigned to Brockton,
back in the 1960s when there was still industry there. By the 1990s,
021 was out of codes, the Boston sorting center was running near
capacity, and Brockton had still only used a handful of 024 numbers.
So, a new sorting center in Waltham was established, and the
fast-growing inner west suburbs were assigned new 024 ZIP codes. This
was all explained in the papers at the time the change took place.
After a reasonable time has elapsed, 02146 will be made available for
reassignment in the area still served by the Boston center.
