Being a former WBUR employee...and around when the whole WRNI thing first
started...I have some knowledge on the situation, but it could be
considered "dated" (I haven't actually worked there since 1999).
WRNI seemed like a great deal at first...new license, complete with studios
and transmitters/towers. What a wash it really was...if memory serves
virtually every piece of equipment, including the towers and transmitters,
had to be replaced....or is so bad that it's slated to be replaced when
there's enough money. In essence, WBUR got screwed on the purchase but in
the end, came out ahead from the added underwriting and fundraising revenue.
As such, I don't think any of the "original" three towers from pre-WRNI
times are still there....new ones were constructed at the same site and the
old ones torn down.
I still chat with the CE over there fairly regularly. I'll ask him about
it the next time I talk to him.
