That reminds me of mornings in the old days on WCSH. For a long time, well
into the 1980's, WCSH was the only Portland TV station with local news in
the morning. The late Cliff Reynolds did early morning news and Today Show
cut-ins on WCSH for decades. Cliff would rip and read, literally! He
pulled the AP copy and read it on the air without a teleprompter. The old
line was that when Cliff did the news, it was news to him because he had
never read it before!
WCSH, with the only morning news, often got a rating of over 50 in the 6AM
hour. WCSH is still the ratings leader in the mornings, I suspect, in part,
due to the habit people developed over the years of turning to that station
to get local news in the morning.
