NERW -- Spark gap?

Scott Fybush mentioned in the latest NERW that Canadian ham VE3BBN
planned to fire up a spark gap transmitter on 3550 kHz on 12/12, the
100th anniversary of Marconi's trans-Atlantic transmission.
Unfortunately, I didn't receive the digest until today, so I missed it.

However, isn't spark gap transmission, by its nature, extremely broad?
How did VE3BBN confine such a signal to 3550 and not wipe out the whole
80 meter band?
