Channels 14-20 (Re: Low UHF channels)

Generally, UHF Channels 14 through 20 can be used
for land-mobile services, provided these channels are
not currently in use. Channels 14 (Worcester, MA) and
Channel 16 (Providence, RI) and Channel 17
(Portsmouth, NH) which were at one time were occupied
with television stations, were reassigned in 1970 as
well as other unused low band UHF Channels in some of
the 20 largest TV markets for use in land mobile use.
UHF in 1970 was a not a favored spectrum for TV in
those days. It wasn't until the UHF tuners got
better or at-par with the VHF's that UHF was beginning
to show strength. There are still stations on
Channels 14-20 that do exist in some of the 20 largest
TV markets in America. Some include.....
    17 WPHL-TV, Philadelphia
    14 WTMW-TV, Washington
   *20 WYCC-TV, Chicago (formerly WIND-TV and WXXW)
    14 KDTV, San Francisco
and others....................
