Patriotic Music 101

I've seen a couple of common errors in previous posts, and Wednesday's
Globe piece on what Boston radio stations did on the one-week
anniversary on Tuesday (everyone but WGBH at least noted it) was rife
with them so, for your information....

"America" is the song sung to the tune of "God Save the Queen." It
begins "My country, 'tis of thee."

"America the Beautiful" is the song that begins "Oh, beautiful for
spacious skies." It was referred to as "America" repeatedly in the Golbe
story.

"God Bless the U.S.A." is the Lee Greenwood song, referred to here at
least once as "Proud to Be an American."

Howard

who, while at the latest Fenway Park debacle last night, noticed an
error in the lyrics provided for the seventh-inning "America the
Beautiful" sing-along. The message board scrolled "purple mountain
majesties" when the correct words are "purple mountains' majesty."
