I really don't think that really is the case nowadays.....that changed
between my first and second year there, once they started buckling down
and trying to be of a respected communications school. Since they are
owned by Husson College now, ahve their own communications center now with
top quality equipment throughout the building, they are being a little
more selective- I know of several people who had interviews and were
turned down. The school has a much higher enrollment then every before,
because of that, it means more people are applying, and they can afford to
be more selective.

If I had never gone to school I -may- have landed a job in radio, a couple
of my radio elders that I knew who worked at WBLM were encouraging me to
put a tape in. Of course that meant nothing to me. I think going to school
was the best thing I could ahve done. It gave me a couple (technically
one since I landed a job a year ago) years to work on my announcing style,
etc before stepping into the real world. Without sounding like a big-head
egotistical jerk, obviously I did something right, the school wouldn't
have reccomended me to Mike Dow when he called the school looking for
weekend help on WBZN. And upon hearing about a job opening at WKIT, I just
left a tape with my phone number- no resume at all, and Bobby Russel still
called me. My attitude was this - I'd love to work at WKIT, although
overnights kinda scared me because I knew that would completely mess my
schedule up (especially while still in school!) and I honestly wasn't sure
if I was good enough for the only station in Bangor that I actually
listened to regularly because I liked the music the best....lus I didn't
want to screw up references over at Cumulus/WBZN, because I liked the
people I worked for. But after three months of 5 second talkups saying
"Z107, todays best music blablabla on the Z" playing music I hated I ended
up at WKIT.....I was originally planning on going back home to Saco in May
and trying to get into Portland radio.....I will start doing that someday
but for the time being I am so damn happy at this station because it is
such a rarity these days.....

Portland is cool because of the lack of Clear Channel stations :)
