Rush ... wha'sup with him/his voice???

i'll admit it... i was listening to Rush today.  what 
the heck is up with his voice?  he sounds like he is 
either trying to "sound" deeper than his usual comfort 
level, or he's loading up on the downers.  if you listen 
to him, it almost sounds like a 7.5 ips tape running at 
6.98 ips.
  any thoughts or insights on this?  i have to admit, he 
was more annoying in "sound" over content today.
