Re: Re: WDER 1320 AM Derry has a web site

WDER does use all four towers--day and night, if I recall correctly. And no,
even if all of the towers are taller than 200', depending on the tower
height and the distance between the unlit and lit towers, it can be just
fine with the FAA to light only two. WRCA has two towers and lights one.
WBPS has five and lights three. What are now the WBPS towers were
constructed in 1981. All five are in-line and are 530' tall. The spacing
between adjacent towers is 257'. The first, third and fifth towers are
strobed. The second and fourth are unlit. At no time were the second and
fourth towers _ever_ lit; there are no lights on them. WRCA's towers are
300' tall and are 150' apart--give or take.

I don't know for sure that I've got the rule right. (I've tried to figure
out what the rule must be by looking at a lof of AM DAs.) It looks to me as
if a tower 200' tall or heigher need not be illuminated if its height is
equal to or less than that of an illuminated tower and its distance from the
illuminated tower is less than the height of the illuminated tower. This is
clearly the case with WBPS and WRCA. On the other hand, it's also the case
with WKOX and WUNR, both of which have two towers of equal height. In both
cases, the height is considerably greater than 200' and in both cases, the
towers are separated by a distance of approximately half the tower height.
(In WUNR's case, I believe the spacing is slightly greater than half tower
height.) Last time I checked, however, both of these stations illuminated
both of their towers.

Certainly there are also special cases. The night famous array of KLUV in
Rockwell TX (east of Dallas) has 12 towers, all of which are just slightly
over 200' high and all of which are illuminated. The towers are in parallel
rows of six with wide spacing within a row and rather short spacing between
rows. All 12 towers are illuminated; there is an airport only a couple of
miles away.

are lighted. My guess is they're only using 2 towers, but shouldn't all 4
towers still be lighted, (assuming they're over 200' tall) whether operative
or not?
