Loss leaders are simply another form of investment. The church doesn't get any money from putting their program on the air, such as commercial fees, etc. The money some churches spend (especially if they're on WBZ or WEEI, as some are in the wee hours of Sunday morning) can be pretty significant. Same goes for the "Hour of Power" and Billy Graham specials airing across the country as well as some national TV pro sports contracts. Do you think FOX, NBC and Turner are really going to recoup the $2 billion or so they spent for six years of NASCAR rights? Probably not, they're trying to simply get a different audience than that which currently watches their programming. (CBS did this in the early '90s with baseball while trying to bring in younger viewers.)
Much like the Bleidts are preaching about the value of their investment firm on the radio station, churches are telling the listener how great their worship services are.
I've also never heard of a Jewish-faith temple doing religious programming; I was simply referring to what some congregations refer to themself as.
