I agree with Donna.  The important thing is to clearly disclaim such
conflicts.  As long as you let readers know about the conflict there is no
problem with letting an opinion columnist express their opinion.  Isn't that
what they are paid for?

The Globe really screwed up on this one.  When you hire someone to write an
opinion column, you have to let them write their opinions.  You should only
edit them to avoid libel and to make sure the facts are correct and the
column is not plagarized.  To do otherwise threatens the credibility of the
paper and their columnists.  If someone is not doing the job to the paper's
standards, get rid of them.  Otherwise, let them do the job you hired them
to do.
