Re: WHDH faces big debate: Bush-Gore or baseball?
Yes...there was a time when WBZ-TV had bought the
rights to "Hawaii Five O" and they ran it weeknights
at 12:30 am, pre-empting some new show called "Late
Night With David Letterman" and a show on Fridays
called "SCTV Network".
You'll remember that "SCTV" had a regular sketch with
Dave Thomas (not the Wendy's guy) and Rick Moranis
(BEFORE he "shrunk the kids") as Bob and Doug
McKenzie.
Canadian TV has this "Canadian content" rule and the
folks at SCTV were told to follow it. "What, do you
want two guys on the screen wearing 'toques' and
frying backbacon?", wondered the SCTV folks. So that's
just what they did. Anyway, when the Bob and Doug
McKenzie movie came out ("Strange Brew"), Thomas and
Moranis appeared on WBCN to promote it. Someone called
in and asked "what's a hoser?" Bob or Doug said
"well, you know the guy at Ch. 4 in Boston who won't
let SCTV be shown? Well's THAT's a HOSER!"
(At least you could still watch Letterman or SCTV
on Ch. 10 in Providence...)
