I have since found some posts on the
rec.music.dementia newsgroup (associated with Dr.
Demento's novelty-song type of music) and it is indeed
true. Michael "Cub" Koda (I had his first name 
wrong) died at the age of 51 after complications from
kidney dialysis. I do believe he was a DJ on WCGY
when they were an oldies station.
