WCAP Subpoenaed
Thought some of you might be interested in the statement issued on behalf
of Maurice Cohen, President and General Manager of WCAP Lowell,
Massachusetts today following his appearance before the Massachusetts
Civil Service Commission.
"At a hearing before the civil service commission in Boston this morning
WCAP General Manager Maurice Cohen appeared pursuant to a subpoena issued
by the commission at the request of the City of Lowell Law Department.
Mr. Cohen produced a transcript of the radio broadcast in question and
indicated that neither he or representatives of WCAP would voluntarily
disclose the source of the information in that broadcast. The Civil
Service Commission acknowledged that it did not have the authority to
compel Mr. Cohen or WCAP to disclose the source of the information, and
that such an order must be issued by the Superior Court. The City of
Lowell is currently considering whether to seek such an order or pursue
less intrusive methods of investigation."
As an aside, and purely coincidental? The City Manager of Lowell, Brian
Martin resigned today effective in mid-July. He had been under fire for
a number of weeks but published reports say that the beating he took from
the city council at the last meeting because of the subpoena was the
straw that broke the camels back.
