The Future of 600 Montreal

Until approximately June, CINW will be simulcasting on both frequencies,
600 and 940...then, after Metromedia turns in the frequency in exchange for
usage of 940, and a period of about 6 months silent, the CRTC will call
applications for a new licensee...so, won't solve the Expos radio coverage
problem for this season.

In addition to an all-sports format being bandied about, another applicant
of English advocacy groups (Bill Johnson, ex of Alliance Quebec ; Howard
Galganov, ex talk-show host on CIQC ; etc.) is also said to be in the
running, which will be a Quebec version of the U.S. "Patriot Talk" format
... under either scenario, there would be a great deal of room for brokered
programming, and I am sure that the Expos could work out a very attractive
time-buy, providing the New 600 with needed cash-flow, while becoming a
profitable cost centre with renewed local enthusiasm for the team
translating into an easier sell of ad spots than has been the case in past
years.

An interesting note re: CINW --- if you commit to a year's worth of ad
spots, i.e. 7 60-second spots per day, 7 days a week, for 52 weeks...it
will only cost you about $21.50CAD / $15USD...no wonder at those rates why
every obscure furniture liquidation house and hair replacement clinic is
choosing radio over newspapers...
