Actually, he started using the name when he was
working at WQBK AM/FM in Albany. Tai was working
at the FM operation while a guy named Tom Leykis
was hosting a show on the AM side. 

When he got to WFNX, there was also a Tom (Lane)
working there so he just kept using Tai.

As far an earlier post about his real name, he
doesn't make a big secret about it. When WFNX owner
Stephen Mindich hosted a show on Boston Cablevision
a few years ago he invited Tai to appear as a guest.
Mindich asked him what 'Tai' stood for and Irwin told
the story like it was no big deal...
