Could be atmospheric disturbances day vs. night.  It happens here in NYC 
on occasion. 

FM is still affected by sunspots and other celestial abnormalities - even
though it's to a lesser extent than AM.  During hurricane season, (I
believe they're called temperature inversions) wreak havoc on local FM
listening.  WHile it drives me nuts when i'm listening to local FM around
the city, it sometimes vastly improves reception on faraway stations I
would otherwise never catch.
