who REALLY listens to classical or jazz?
I am trying to do some research for an article on specialty formats. The
common wisdom is that people who listen to classical or jazz formats on
radio are wealthier, older, and better educated. That looks great on a
sales presentation, and lord knows I have seen lots of sales hype that
claims such things are true. But is there any reliable demographic profile
any of you have seen that tells who really is listening to these
formats? Those of you who have worked with such formats, have you seen any
of your audience, and are the listeners really mostly over 45 years of
age? I ask because despite what I have read, when I consult specialty
format stations, the listeners seem much younger than the common wisdom. I
consulted WOTB when it was a jazz station, for example, and our remote
broadcasts and our events drew listeners who were in their 20s, which I
found surprising...
