the Jim Gray controversy
As you may have read in yesterday's newspapers, NBC
has taken a lot of heat from angry viewers as a result
of reporter Jim Gray's interview of baseball's Pete
Rose, following the ceremony in which Rose was
included as part of the "All Century Team".
There's been a lot of talk about this on sports talk
radio, plus on the Net. The consensus seems to be that
while Gray's questions about Rose's alleged betting
on baseball are "just him doing his job", it was not
appropriate for such an interview to be taking place
right after an honors ceremony. Strange...NBC could
have talked to Ted Williams, Hank Aaron, Roger
Clemens, Mark McGwire, or any of a number of players.
They picked Pete Rose...could it be that they wanted
a scoop? Rose is indeed a controversial figure, but
was Sunday night the right time to talk to him about
his alleged gambling?
I could see Gray asking the question once or twice and
then moving on, but Gray persisted in asking about
the alleged betting.
Gray did apologize on Tuesday night. After the game,
Gray tried to interview Yankee Chad Curtis, who had
hit the winning home run. Curtis would not allow Gray
to interview him, as there is apparently a player
boycott of Gray...
