Compared to the old practice of putting each spot 
on a 5" wide-hub reel and having 3 Magnecorders
just for spot playback with the accompanying 
threading, cueing and rewinding, it's a labor-saving 
device.

They used to put spots on acetates.  They quickly
wore out and became noisy.  Had to be re-recorded

Sure beats paying for an engineer to be on-duty at 
all times just to ride gain.
