Competitors buzz MixFest '99

(Boston)--Infinity's WBMX-FM had to contend with flying ads for archrivals as
thousands of fans crowded City Hall Plaza yesterday for its annual music
festival. Entercom's WAAF was the most aggressive competitor, trailing the
message "It's been 81 years...please let us win!" (a reference to the do-or-die
Red Sox game going on that afternoon at nearby Fenway Park.) Greater
Media's FM Talk 96.9's message was more blatantly self-promotional,
referencing its newly-acquired syndicated morning talker Don Imus, but its
message flew less often. At street level, a van for AMFM's WJMN-FM was
seen driving past the venue. All in all, it was a case study in guerilla
promotional tactics. MixFest '99 continues today at Foxboro Stadium.

Take care,
Chris
