Most Drive-In movie theatre are using low power FM Stereo transmitters for 
the movie sound.  The signal is contoured to pretty much die at the 
periphery of the field.  A lot of my customers are using an FM exciter made 
by a company that used to be called Catel.  It's fairly flat from 50 to 15k 
with 25db of separation.  If you've got a decent car stereo it sound pretty 
good (at least better than talk radio... ;-)).

As an example, the Rustic Drive-In in Smithfield RI was getting trampled by 
a college station from North Dartmouth.
