no, it tries to correct for a lack of audio in the channel "not being used"...
matter of fact, it just did it on "Make It With You" by Bread. one guitar
starts solo on the left, and then another jumps in on the right...
the left-only is "free" to be separate, then, until the second guitar on the
right comes in, the phase correction unit will "mono" it out. this device is
not capable of know that the song was produced that way... (separate elements
on separate channels). it reads audio on one channel, and nothing on the
other, and therefore tries to remedy the situation. it reads that as a
phase error, with no "mono in the middle", and therefore creates the "mono in
the middle" to keep itself happy.
if there is an actual "phase error", it will take one of the tracks and
convert it to the mono mix...
other than that, how it knows? magic? voodoo? witchcraft? probably
witchcraft.
(of course then, we'd have to weigh the technology on a scale with a
duck...)
