There's a long history of record companies fooling with songs for
censorship and other reasons without even telling the artist--usually
somebody's idea of improving them for commercial success in some way. Paul
Simon has told the story of coming back to NYC from England and riding in a
taxi from the airport and hearing on the radio that they had added drums to
"Sounds of Silence." Of course, the good news was that it was on the
radio--with a bullet. When they remastered the Byrds' early recordings
recently, they found that the master actually had another 20-25 seconds of
instrumental on the fade at the end of "Turn, Turn, Turn," which had gotten
a fast fade for the original release because, in 1965, at around 3:30, it
was considered awfully long for the radio. Some stations still have the
short version and some jocks still jump on the end right after the drum hit
even if they have the longer version, but sometimes you hear the music go
on a little more, the way they intended it to be heard.
